Tips to Choosing the Program Thatʼs Right for You and Your Child...
• Finding a program that's right for your child will make his days enjoyable and stimulating.
• Finding a program thatʼs right for you will give you peace of mind.
Get references
Talk with your friends, neighbors, and acquaintances about local Momʼs Day Out programs and preschools. Get details about
what they liked, and what they didnʼt.
Check Online
Most schools provide detailed information online, including:
Accreditation, policies, programs, tuition and fees, etc. Get as much
information as you can before calling.
Call Schools
After youʼve narrowed the list, call schools youʼre considering. Some things you may want to ask:
• What is the Student/Teacher ratio?
• How long has the program been around?
• How long have most of the teachers been on staff?
• What are the days & times of the program youʼre interested in?
Traditionally, older kids go more frequently than younger ones.
Some programs also offer afternoon classes versus morning.
• How much outside time do the kids have each day?
• If it rains, is there somewhere for them to run around indoors?
• Do they offer extended day programs for working parents?
Ask About the Schoolʼs Philosophy
Different preschools follow different philosophies of education. Ask
directors to outline their philosophies. Be advised that there's
only so much you can learn by a school's label--For example, the term "Montessori" means many different things to different
administrators and teachers. Always ask a school in which you're
interested to spell out their individual philosophy and teaching
methods.
Plan a visit
Most schools welcome prospective parents to come for a visit (if they don't, that's a red flag). If you call ahead, the school
principal, director, or a staff member will set aside time to talk with
you and give you a tour of the facilities. In addition, you might
ask permission to observe a classroom. In order to observe effectively,
stand or sit quietly away from any action, and don't try to
talk with the teacher or children during the class. Plan to stay for at
least 20 to 30 minutes to really get a sense of how the class
runs.

LISD PPCD (at select LISD schools)
Another option to consider is LISD’s PPCD program. Although the program is designed for preschool-aged children with disabilities, they also need "peer models" for each classroom. As a peer model your child would serve as an example of age appropriate behavior in a learning environment. All of the instruction is based on the Pre-K Curriculum requirements of TEA, which are addressed for students’ individual needs. Areas addressed include language and early literacy, math, science, fine arts, personal and social development, etc. Program hours and ages vary by campus. Contact your local elementary school for details or call the LISD Special Ed department at 469-713-5203.
Lewisville Rec Center - Early Connections
Offered by the City of Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services, these programs are held at the Herring Rec Center at 191 Civic Circle in Lewisville. Programs are available for 2 year olds (who are close to “potty-trained” through Pre-K, and offer many fun, academic and creative based activities throughout the day including gym, art and music. For more information, call (972) 219-3560 or visit them online at www.cityoflewisville.com.
