Summer Fun with Adventure Day Camps
Summer has hit, where are your kids? Are they playing video games, watching hours of tv, taking trips to the mall, sleeping in late, visiting grandparents, or signed up for numerous summer camps filled with a variety of activities!
When asked to describe a typical day at Adventure Day Camps on Lake Grapevine, I jumped on the opportunity! My passion and desire is for each of our campers to experience a piece of what I did growing up – good old fashioned outdoor fun! I want them to make new friends, get dirty, experience nature, gain some confidence, learn a new skill…summer should be a time where kids can turn their minds off and just be kids!
Since the summer of 2004, we have offered an outdoor recreation day camp for kids ages 4-13 on the shores of Lake Grapevine – other than 2015 when the lake flooded. This summer, when arriving at Meadowmere Park, parents will check their campers in under our big white tent located on the 2nd peninsula within the park. When a camper is dropped off in the mornings, they can pick from a number of open stations where counselors will be anxiously awaiting to help with archery, bb gun target shooting, the bounce house/water slide, sand box, or an organized game at the volleyball net. Around 10am, we break for a morning snack, go over the plan for the day, apply sunscreen, and head out for a group activity – scavenger hunt, nature walk, field games, capture the flag, or a craft.
We typically break for lunch around noon, welcome the afternoon campers that are joining us for the day, then sunscreen again before grabbing their life jackets to head down to the lake! Our afternoon is full of swimming, kayaking, fishing, and sand castle building. It’s pure joy watching a camper catch their first fish or get on a kayak for the first time! They just light up!!
Around 3pm, we head back to the tent to change clothes, pack up their bags, enjoy an afternoon snack, and, until they are picked up, campers can head back out to one of the morning station activities or grab the sports equipment. We have disc golf, basketball, football, baseball and more!
It is definitely an action-packed day for our campers. They play hard and go home tired! Sometimes, you may find your camper passed out before even getting out of the park…in the eyes of most parents…success!
