AquaKids: The Importance of Swim Safety
According to the CDC, ten people die every day from unintentional drowning. Drowning is one of the most common causes of accidental death, so being able to swim is an essential life skill.
Drowning is preventable!
One of the easiest ways to prevent drowning is supervising children around water. Make sure your kids are always supervised and the individual watching the child is not distracted. Accidents can happen in an instant!
Putting a fence around your pool or around any body of water on your property that a child might have access to is also a good way to prevent accidents.
However, the most crucial step to preventing drowning is learning to swim. It is important to teach children to swim early, but even as an adult it isn’t too late to learn. Swim lessons teach students a variety of skills including breath control and back floating, which is crucial when an individual falls in the water and cannot get out or is too tired to continue to swim.
Once the skill of swimming is mastered, it is rarely forgotten and people of all ages can enjoy swimming! Learning to swim opens up other water activities where being able to swim is critical such as kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, and other aquatic sports such as diving and water polo! Not only is swimming fun but it is great to keep yourself and your child healthy and happy.
