Chickasaw Cultural Center
One of our favorite activities of the weekend was visiting the Chickasaw Cultural Center. The Chickasaw Cultural Center offers demonstrations, cultural classes, hands-on activities, and more.
It’s set on 109 acres, next to the Chickasaw National Recreation Center. Plan on spending some time on the grounds. There are beautiful sculptures throughout, as well as an honor garden, eternal flame, and more.
Be sure to bring some quarters for fish and turtle food. They have the BIGGEST catfish I’ve ever seen!!
Throughout the property, watch for signs that tell you not only the name of various plants and trees, but how Native Americans used them.
Inside, you’ll find an impressive museum with lots of interesting information about the Chickasaw.
Tables are set up to provide demonstrations and one-on-one conversations about how they made musical instruments, jewelry, weapons, and more.
You can also walk through a historically accurate 1750-era Chickasaw village with Chickasaws demonstrating the crafts and techniques from that time.
Behind the village, you’ll see a suspension bridge, with a rack of bikes next to it. Bikes can be used to ride the one-mile path to the Chickasaw Recreation Area.
