The Laramie Project Lewisville High School: The award-winning Lewisville High School Theatre Department will continue its stunning 2016-17 season with three performances of the intense drama, The Laramie Project, on Dec. 1-3.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. each night at LHS Stuver Auditoium, 1098 W. Main Street. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students, available in advance at LewisvilleTheatre.com or at the door prior to each performance.
This important play by Moises Kaufman revisits the 1998 murder of gay university student Matthew Shepard who was beaten, tortured, and left to die by two attackers in Laramie, Wyoming, who targeted Shepard because he was homosexual. The murder was denounced as a hate crime and sparked a national discussion about hate crimes in general, and about violence toward homosexuals in particular.
The Laramie Project draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the Tectonic Theater Project with inhabitants of the town, company members’ own journal entries, and published news reports. It premiered in February 2000 and was previously performed by the LHS Theatre Department in 2002. The play often is used to teach about prejudice and tolerance in public and private schools and colleges. As a result of the play’s success, HBO commissioned a 2002 film of The Laramie Project, also written and directed by Kaufman.
The original production used eight actors to portray more than 60 characters in a series of short scenes. The LHS cast includes 29 student actors.
LHS Theatre kicked off its 2016-17 season with four exciting performances of Disney’s High School Musical in October. The season continues on Jan. 19-21 with a double-feature of The Insanity of Mary Girard and The Beggar’s Opera. A special Magic Theatre children’s show will be presented March 2. The season will close May 5-6 with a dessert show performance of Dearly Departed.
Lewisville High School won the school’s first One-Act Play state championship in May 2015.
