Spring is in the air, and we are edging closer to the lazy days of summer. Children already enrolled in swim lessons are excited to put their well-earned swimming skills to use, while others are just starting to enroll in preparation for a busy swim season.
Summer is the season when families are around water more often. From backyard pool parties and family vacations at lakes, rivers and beaches, water is a constant source for fun and smiles throughout the season. With exposure to water increasing, the importance of water safety increases as well. In fact, according to the CDC, “Drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional, injury-related death among children ages 1-4 and the #2 cause for children up to 14.”
So what are some ways you can be prepared for a splashtastic summer season?
Get ready for summer sunshine and water fun with the correct toys and a prepared yard.
With super soakers, silly-shaped rafts and pool loungers, it’s easy to stay festive with water accessories. However, for young tots, the toy to avoid is arm floaties. These swim toys can give children and caregivers a false sense of security when it comes to water safety. They are easy to remove and can quickly and quietly be disregarded when you’re looking away. If a flotation device is needed, it’s best to keep tots secure in a Coast Guard approved life jacket for optimum safety.
In addition, prep your yard. Pools should be behind a four-foot fence with a gate that locks. When not outside or in the pool, be sure to put away any toys to discourage children from reaching across the pool to gather them.
Swim lessons work hand-in-hand with the other layers of safety, whether continuing with a program or just beginning the swim journey this season. At Aqua-Tots, our classes are year-round. That means socialization and fun with friends in addition to practicing and progressing in water safety skills all year long. And how about the benefits of keeping kiddos active? They get regular physical activity with each swim lesson, creating tuckered out tots. Doesn’t a nice, quiet evening sound relaxing?
At Aqua-Tots Flower Mound, we have a curriculum and classes for every level of swimmer. Starting as early as four months old, our classes are designed to teach water safety skills that develop children into safe and confident swimmers for life.
And with our flexible class schedules and make-up lessons, you’re free to go on your summer vacation and pick right back up where you left off upon your return.
