Did You Know? “Drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1-4 and the #2 cause for children up to 14.” – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
At Aqua-Tots Swim Schools, we wake up each morning with one primary purpose: to save lives worldwide. We do that in our school, teaching children to swim as early as four months old. We do that through community outreach, educating people about how to remain safe in and around the water. We do that worldwide, offering the proven Aqua-Tots curriculum in 120 communities in 14 countries around the globe.
We would like to take a moment to pause and acknowledge the reality of drowning and why we do what we do. After all, drowning is silent, and claims the lives of over 3,500 people every year in the United States alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Even one life lost is too many. However, there are proactive steps we can all take to save lives.
- Swim Lessons: According to the National Institutes of Health, “Participation in formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children ages 1-4 years old.” Keeping your children enrolled in year-round swim lessons is more than a fun activity and far from your average sport. Swim lessons are a safety measure in line with car seats and a life skill in line with reading and writing. Learning how to roll over and float, how to find air, how to get to the edge and get out of the water are skills that save children’s lives daily, and we are proud to come alongside each family to give their children a lifetime of swimming skills.
- Supervision: Water safety comes with multiple layers of protection. From locks and barriers to certified life vests and CPR training, a vigilant caregiver is one who recognizes that water is all around us at all times. Constant supervision, however, plays one of the most significant roles in keeping children safe in and around the water. Children can drown in as little as 20 seconds in as little as two inches of water. Bathtubs and buckets, backyard pools and waterparks, lakes and oceans. Water is everywhere, and children are curious. We encourage you to avoid distractions (cell phones, books, magazines, chatting with friends, sunbathing) when children are in or around the water, and commit your focus to their safety. Plus, you can have a lot of fun splashing around with them in the process.
At Aqua-Tots Flower Mound, we want to give your precious children a lifetime of water adventures, and that starts with a foundation of water safety from the very start. That is why our curriculum, is based on 8 levels of progression, designed to help children become safe and confident swimmers for life.
