May is National Water Safety Month
This month, we want to pause and acknowledge the importance of water safety and reflect on WHY safe and confident swimming skills are so valuable. Drowning is silent and claims the lives of over 3,500 people every year in the United States alone, according to the CDC. Even one life lost is too many and equipping yourself with a few facts can help save lives.
Swim Lessons are far more than an extracurricular activity. Swim lessons are a safety measure in line with car seats and a life skill in line with reading and writing. Learning how to roll over and float, how to find air, how to get to the edge and get out of the water are skills that save children’s lives daily. According to the National Institutes of Health, participation in formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children ages 1-4 years old.
If you’re wondering what you can do to ensure your child’s safety, here are a few layers of protection that will make time in and around the water happy, splashy and fun.
Designate a responsible adult Water Watcher to keep an eye on children when you are in and around water. It only takes a second to tumble in the tub, reach for a floating toy in the pool or wander to a nearby pond.
Learning how to swim is key to a lifetime of water safety. Understanding safe boundaries, knowing how to independently find air and confidently swimming to the pool’s edge are skills that can be lifesaving.
Locked gates, closed doors and even motion alarms can all help keep kids away from water when unattended. Pools should have a four-foot fence and a gate that locks, bathroom doors should remain closed, toilet lids latched, and buckets empty.
Caregivers of all ages should be CPR certified and trained in first aid. In addition, when spending time near water, keep a phone close by in case of emergencies.
